Project:
Reliability and availability analysis of the Mataf Shading System
Period:
2014
Partner:
Leitner ropeways AG
A retractable shading system was designed for the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca by Leitner AG with a total area of 2 x 15’000 m2. The retractable roof system can be folded in specific situations. In this project the reliability and the availability of the folding mechanism was calculated in order to check in a quantitative manner that the complex mechanism is highly available for operation.

Project:
Quantitative analysis of the risks to the surrounding population resulting from
aircraft crashes at a site of the chemical industry
Period:
2013
In this project, the risk and impact on the population resulting from a potential aircraft crash on the grounds of the storage facility for the chemical industry was evaluated. Using a Bayesian network the risk was analysed considering impact on system components, crash probability and dispersion of hazardous substances.

Project:
Recommended action for bridge pillars
Period:
2013
The static verification of bridge pillars showed that the resistance of the supports against impact loads is too low. In order to submit the recommendation for action, the accident frequency, the impact frequency for each support, the probability distribution function of the impact load, the probability of failure of the supports, and the annual risk due to restraints impact were calculated.

Project:
Failure probability due to metal corrosive processes
Period:
2012
As part of a restoration pitting was found in rebars during repair measures on the existing Magnesium Sulfate screed. The failure probability for punching (Model of SIA 262/rev.) taking into account the corrosion (pitting and general corrosion) was calculated and assessed in the light of the system behavior and the stress history of the building. It could be demonstrated that the safety is guaranteed.

Project:
NENDAZ POWER STATION (altitude 478 m)
Reliability analysis of a hydroelectric power station
Period:
2010
In this project, a reliability analysis was performed for one level of the hydroelectric power plant. The reliability of the armored pressure shaft was calculated with respect to the load due to pump and turbine operation. The influence of emergency stop situations was also considered. A mechanical model for the resistance was developed considering the composite steel armor surrounding concrete.

Project:
Development and enforcement of a security concept for planning (QGP), construction and operation
of tourism resorts, Andermatt Swiss Alps
Period:
2007 – 2014
We engineered the safety concept for the accommodation development and served the Orascom Development AG during construction as security advisers in all related matters. We assigned responsibilities to all stakeholders and developed a roadmap for the entire construction phase as a planning tool.
